Yes, 100%. HushType uses OpenAI's Whisper model running locally on your Mac via Metal GPU acceleration. You can enable airplane mode and it works perfectly. The only network request ever made is to download the model itself—after that, zero internet is required.
Whisper is the same AI model that powers many cloud transcription services. With the Turbo or Large model, accuracy is comparable to or better than most cloud alternatives. The main difference is it runs on your hardware, so processing speed depends on your Mac's capabilities.
For most users, we recommend Turbo (809 MB)—it offers the best balance of speed and accuracy. If you have an M1 Pro or better, Large (3 GB) gives maximum accuracy. If you need instant results and can tolerate occasional errors, Tiny or Base work great for quick notes.
Yes. The global hotkey works system-wide—press it from any application and start speaking. When you're done, the transcribed text is copied to your clipboard. Paste it into any text field: emails, documents, code editors, chat apps, anywhere.
Open HushType from the menu bar, go to Settings, and click the hotkey field. Press your preferred key combination. Common alternatives include ⌃Space, ⌥⌘V, or F5. You can also switch between push-to-talk and toggle modes.
Your history is stored locally using Apple's SwiftData framework—the same secure storage used by native macOS apps. It never syncs to any cloud service. You can configure automatic deletion after 7, 30, or 90 days, or keep history forever. You can also manually delete any entry at any time.
Yes to both. On Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4), HushType uses Metal GPU acceleration for significantly faster transcription. Intel Macs are fully supported but may be slower, especially with larger models. We recommend the Small or Base model for Intel Macs.
No catch. HushType is a passion project built to solve a real problem: private, reliable voice typing without monthly fees or cloud dependencies. There are no ads, no premium tiers, no in-app purchases. The app is completely free because we believe privacy tools shouldn't have paywalls.
